Basilica di San Nicola

The Basilica of San Nicola in the heart of the old city of Bari is one of the finest examples of Apulian Romanesque architecture. It was built between 1089 and 1197, during the Norman domination.
Tradition has it that the Basilica was built after the arrival of a group of sailors to Bari, who had in their possession the remains of San Nicola.
The Church was built to house and protect the Saint’s relics.

Suggested itinerary

One of the greatest sculpture masterpieces of Apulian’s Romanesque period: a bishop’s chair made in the late 11th century.
The influx of pilgrims over the centuries made it possible to compile a treasury consisting of the gifts (often of precious materials) they brought to the Basilica as a sign of devotion to the Saint venerated here.
