Bari’s history goes back 4,000 years. Over the millennia the city was conquered by Muslims, Byzantines, Normans and Romans, who succeeded one another over the centuries for control of a centrally located city in the region, a strategic one for trade.

Old Bari and New Bari, so identified by Giocchino Murat who had them built in 1813, are the centre of the city. The two “cities” are divided by Corso Vittorio Emanuele, where the Palace Hotel stands.
